As usual, we will have a friendly potluck dinner followed by the projection of a French movie subtitled in English.
This time we offer a film named “Cold Cuts”, by Bernard Blier.

From Bernard Blier, the Academy Award-winning director, comes “Cold Cuts”, a farcical thriller starring Gérard Depardieu as Alphonse, an unemployed drifter obsessed with murder and death. Structured as an absurdly hilarious nightmare, Cold Cuts has logic that is both twisted and is drawn into inescapable complicity of murder, treachery, and paranoia which is both twisted and stark: a husband befriends his wife’s murderer, a high-ranking official plans his own death, a lost knife is found in the belly of a subway passenger. Together with the Chief of Police and a murderer who is afraid of the dark, Depardieu is drawn into inescapable complicity in murder, treachery, and paranoia which draws him closer and closer to a fateful end.

Comme d’habitude nous aurons d’abord un dîner “potluck” amical, suivi par la projection d’un film français sous-titré en anglais.
Cette fois-ci nous offrirons un film appelé “Buffet froid”, de Bernard Blier.

Bernard Blier, metteur en scène de plusieurs films gagnants de l’Academy Award, a aussi produit “Buffet froid”. C’est un film policier, burlesque, mettant Gérard Depardieu en vedette, dans le rôle d’un fainéant au chômage, obsédé par le meurtre et la mort. “Buffet froid” est structuré comme un cauchemar absurdement drôle, et est à la fois compliqué et rigide: un mari devient l’ami de l’assassin de sa femme, un fonctionnaire de haut niveau projette sa propre mort, un poignard est retrouvé dans le ventre d’un passager du métro. Accompagné par le chef de la police et un assassin qui a peur de l’obscurité, Depardieu est entraîné dans une complexité de meurtre inéluctable, de trahison, de paranoia, qui le pousse de plus en plus vers une fin fatale.
