April 16, 2026
4:00 pm – 5:00 pm (ET)
Online Event

Art historian and novelist Thomas Schlesser joins art historian Beth Gersh-Nesic to discuss his brilliant coming-of-age novel about a 10-year-old girl who loses her sight for an hour and then spends a year learning how to see, guided by her beloved grandfather, Henry, whom she calls Dadé. Together they visit the Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, and Centre Pompidou to study one artwork each week because Henry wants Mona to memorize all the beauty and knowledge that art masterpieces can deliver, if indeed she becomes blind one day. Thanks to their lively banter, Mona and the reader learn about life, love, and how to look for the wisdom artists may convey through their art. Professor Schlesser will also tell the audience about his new novel, recently released in France, Le Chat du Jardinier (Albin Michel, 2026)

AFGO at the 74th Congress of French Culture in Florida
Our Alliance Française of Greater Orlando team had the honor of serving once again as judges at the 74th Congrès de la Culture Française en Floride (CCFF), held March 5–7, 2026 at the Caribe Royale Orlando. This year’s congress brought together hundreds of enthusiastic students from across the state to celebrate the theme “Le cinéma du monde francophone.” It was a wonderful moment of community and collaboration, as we worked alongside FABCO Orlando and were proud to be joined by one of our members, Gerline Smith, who attended as part of a leadership seminar. A French teacher in Florida and Vice President of the American Association of Teachers of French, Gerline’s presence made the experience even more meaningful. We extend our sincere thanks to the organizers for their continued dedication to promoting French language and culture throughout Florida. Bravo to all the students, teachers, judges, and volunteers who made this year’s event such a success!
